	Things to do in Tairua and Pauanui on the Coromandel Peninsula

There is always something to do in Tairua. It may look like a sleepy town from an outsiders perspective but once you actually look around and get to know whats going on, you will find a plethora of interesting things to do.

Tairua also have a large range of active clubs that have activities ranging from indoor bowling through to music and performance clubs. There is something for everyone. You can view the club and social group details on our club page here

Beach and Estuary Fun:
Try your hand at swimming, surfing, fishing or gathering shellfish. For the more adventurous try hang gliding, land yachting or horse riding. The estuary is great for kayaking and on a calm day you can kayak out of the estuary and into the open ocean. Some of the fitter people even kayak all the way to the alderman islands !!
The local dive shop has kayaks available for hire.

Historic Gold Mines, Glow Worms and Bush Walks:
The Pukatui Valley has an amazing array of exciting bush walks. Some of the walks go through hundreds of metres of old gold mines. In these gold mines are a spectacular display of glow worms. As good as any other glow worm displays in New Zealand but completely FREE!!
After a hot days walk you can cool off in one of the many swimming holes in the Tairua river.

Golf, Bowling, Rugby, Tennis and other sports in Tairua
The Tairua Country Club, situated in the heart of Tairua Township and offering Bowls, Croquet and a 18 hole golf course. The Golf Course is not long, but offers many challenges with natural water features and bush lined fairways where placement rather than length often wins. The golfer is able to take in wonderful views of the Coromandel Ranges, Pepe Estuary, Tairua Harbour and Entrance which includes views of Shoe, Slipper and Mayor Islands to the east. Tairua also have tennis courts which can be used by anyone wanting to play tennis. There is no charge to use them and if the gate is unlocked feel free to use the tennis courts at your leisure. The tennis courts are located on Manaia road at the far end of the rugby field.

Rugby is also a popular sport in Tairua and games are held most weekends on the rubgy field during the season. Anyone is welcome to come along and watch the games. It makes a great afternoon watching the game and meeting some of the locals.

Bowling in Tairua is an institution. Tairua boasts a well equipted bowling club. The club welcome new members and can be located on Hornsea road. For information about the bowling club click here
