At present there are no campgrounds in Tairua. This is a major upset to many of the community who feel that the council should re-open the campground in town.

Technically freedom camping in Tairua is illegal but many people still do it anyway and dont seem to get in trouble for it.

The most common place freedom campers go is Sailors grave and the north end of Ocean beach.
